FRIENDS BUILDING
Welcome to the "Friends" building at 90 Bedford Street. This building has become an iconic Village landmark since the first episode of the world's most popular sitcom aired in 1994. While the interiors were filmed on a soundstage in Burbank, California, the building’s exterior is a must-see location for fans visiting New York City.
Any New Yorker will tell you that the size of Monica & Rachel's and Joey & Chandler's apartments were completely unrealistic. Seriously... bordering on fantasyland.
According to 2024 estimates, the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the Village can range from $5,000 to $7,000 per month, depending on amenities. More spacious and well-appointed apartments, like those with a huge eat in kitchen and an outdoor balcony, could easily exceed $10,000 a month. In this particular building, I haven't found any data on two bedroom apartments, but one bedroom apartments have recently been listed for over $4000 a month.
Since you're here, I'm sure you're just dying to take a photo. The absolute best spot to snap a pic of this famed building is to walk diagonally across the street and stand directly under the Bedford & Grove street sign, just in front of the four story Federal-style building on the corner. Which, by the way, has a fascinating story all on its own.
This building is known as the Isaacs-Hendricks House. And this Federal style of architecture was very popular with the upper class from about the 1780's to the 1830's. Harmon Hendricks, who purchased the house a year after it was built, was a huge industrialist in the copper industry. And... interesting to note... his family had connections to American Revolution hero Paul Revere.
